MedStar Implements Field Deployable Stop the Bleed Kits
Can be Distributed to Lay Persons When Disaster Strikes

December 6, 2019 – Fort Worth, TX – Stop the Bleed kits save lives when disaster strikes. But, how do you know when and where you’ll need the kits?
MedStar has developed an answer to that question by assembling six specialized duffle bags, each containing 40 Stop the Bleed kits that can be deployed to bystanders in the field to help them treat trauma victims.
The kits have been placed in all MedStar supervisor response vehicles, with additional kits available to be used during mass gatherings such as the Main Street Arts Festival, TCU events, Mayfest, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, and events at Texas Motor Speedway.
“When we respond to a large scale incident, we now have the ability to open up the bag on scene and disperse the STB kits to bystanders as needed. This is a tool that has the potential to save lives during disasters or events like an active shooter situation” explains Michael Potts, MedStar’s manager of special events and safety, who developed and implemented the kits.
MedStar recommends that Stop the Bleed kits be available everywhere, just like fire extinguishers and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Having these field-deployable duffle bags as an added resource will be exceptionally valuable when the unthinkable happens!
The kits were funded through a $10,000 grant from the North Texas Regional Trauma Advisory Council (NCTTRAC).
MedStar offers free Stop the Bleed classes, which includes training in the use of the items in Stop the Bleed Kits.
