Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification course is provided by a regional Master Instructor with the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch through MedStar. Training consists of 5 weeks of classroom training and on-the-job training with a Communications Training Officer.
Scope of Practice
Basic Emergency Care
Basic Emergency Care
Provide basic emergency medical care and transport to patients accessing the EMS system
Advanced Emergency Care
Provide the highest level of pre-hospital care to those accessing the EMS system, including starting IV’s, advanced airway skills and medication administration.
Call-Taker/SSC
Answers incoming administrative, client city and 911 lines with non-emergency and the emergency request for service; provides medical pre-arrival instructions as required by the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch protocols.
SSC
In addition to call-taker duties monitor all radio traffic and the system ensuring appropriate deployment of units.

Certified as Emergency Care Attendant (ECA) Or NR First Responder
Texas Department of State Health Services
Upon successful completion of the classroom and clinical training at the college of your choice, you will then sit for the National Registry of EMT’s (NREMT) certification exam. The NREMT certification is required to receive certification from TDSHS.

National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatchers
After successful completion of the Emergency Medical Dispatch course provided by MedStar, you will receive a two (2) year Emergency Medical Dispatch certification.

There are no schools that currently offer the course requirements to become certified as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher with the Academy of Emergency Dispatch. However, classes are offered through various EMS agencies (including MedStar).
